Personal Trainer Overview

I utilize many different styles of workouts, each designed to improve various aspects of health and fitness. They are almost always full-body workouts, but my programs are highly dependent on my client's goals and needs, so my programs can vary greatly between individuals.

My intent is to challenge you enough to stimulate improvement (neurological, strength, endurance, stability, body awareness, bone density, etc.) yet not leave you feeling exhausted or run down, My clients feel better at the end of their workouts.

Training Philosophy

I follow a health first approach to fitness and while I certainly help people have better looking bodies, I don't sacrifice long-term health or physical function for short-term weight loss.

Optimal training is not just about training muscles or learning new movements, but rather understanding how your body creates movement. A primary goal of mine is to identify and retrain unhealthy neurological recruitment patterns. In other words, training to improve how your body functions when you aren't consciously thinking about it.

I believe this is one of the most overlooked and untrained aspects in fitness programs and it's perhaps the most important for maintaining optimal health and function throughout life. This is my goal and if my approach sounds right for you, contact me for more information.

Education

I have a BA in psychology from Grinnell College and received my first personal trainer certification (NSCA) in 1996. I spent the next 10 years learning about as many different training modalities as possible. Since then, I have been continually learning more and streamlining my approach, combining what I found (through personal experience and working with clients) to be the most useful aspects from many areas of health and fitness.

I learned a lot about performance enhancement from the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) and a lot about healthy body mechanics (posture, etc.) from the NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). Those organizations influenced me the most, yet I have many other influences as well.

I combine aspects of a wide variety of fields including weightlifting, rehabilitation, martial arts, Pilates, and yoga, just to name a few. I also include nutritional consulting, mental training, and much more. If there's something I think will improve my client's success, I will learn about it and utilize it for my client's benefit.

Bio

From the age of 7 I had major hip problems and I learned how important exercise is for maintaining and improving function. I know that my life would have been very different and I would be severely limited in what I can do at this point in my life without applying what I have learned about health and fitness.

Now after 20+ years in the fitness industry, I use my extensive knowledge, experience, and skills in many areas of health and fitness to help others learn more about their bodies and achieve things they previously wouldn't have thought were possible.

My ultimate goal is to help each of my clients live a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling life.
