Personal Trainer Overview

I will work with you to get you excited about exercise, and help you find the energy that comes from an active lifestyle. No matter how much or how little you have done lately, you will be amazed at what you CAN do over time. Let me help you discover this for yourself.

Training Philosophy

A body at rest tends to remain at rest... a body in motion tends to remain in motion. This is the law of inertia, and wow, does it apply to our own bodies. If you get moving, even on a small scale, it makes it easier to KEEP moving and be active every day. I like helping clients increase their energy through exercise. It never fails to amaze people, how something that makes you tired in the short-term gives you more energy in the long-term. You have to experience it to believe it.

Not everyone likes the same things, so I use a lot of different equipment and modalities (weights, kettlebells, TRX, Bosu, indoor/outdoor workouts, etc.) to keep things fresh and the workouts fun. That said, if a client prefers more of a regular routine and gets intimidated by new things, I will keep it simple. Either way, I provide challenge by progressing either the weight lifted, duration or intensity of cardio, or difficulty of exercises as needed. I've also had a lot of experience helping people revive their exercise programs after physical therapy and rehab.

Making exercise a part of your life requires some sacrifices. Women especially have a hard time saying "no" to other people to make time for themselves. If this is the case for you, please get ready to exercise your "NO" muscle as well as your other muscles, to keep your workout program on track. Your commitment to YOURSELF has to come first for awhile, so please explain this to your significant others.

Education

B.S. in Business Administration, coursework in psychology. Continuing education courses in post-rehab exercise and special populations, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, orthopedic issues, and prenatal/postpartum fitness. Previously worked in a chiropractic office/ rehab center. I attend fitness conferences for continuing education on a regular basis. [Note: I am *not* a physical therapist or medical professional, but I can help you implement their recommendations.]

Bio

After college and a first career in Information Technology, I found myself drawn to working with people, not computers. A lifelong student of human behavior, I began working as a personal trainer while taking coursework in psychology. Seeing how people benefit psychologically from getting in shape, I ditched my plans for graduate school and became a personal trainer full-time in 1997, working at one gym and then another. In 2000, I opened Breakthrough Personal Training Studio in Upper Marlboro, MD, which later became Breakthrough Fitness. I moved the business to my home in Calvert County, MD, in 2010. Currently I train clients there and/or in their homes in the local area.
