Personal Trainer Overview

John Sebastian Personal Training and Iron Spirit Studio is home to the "S.T.R.O.N.G. Free-Weight Training Certificate Program." S.T.R.O.N.G. stands for Strength Training Routines Of the Next Generation, and the S.T.R.O.N.G. Free-Weight Training Certificate Program stresses the newest and most effective free-weight training techniques to attain a lean, powerful, muscular physique, along with all the other benefits of progressive strength training. The S.T.R.O.N.G. Certificate Program consists of a Basic Clinic and three Advanced Clinics that lead to the S.T.R.O.N.G. Elite Lifters Certificate. The purpose of all of these Clinics is pretty simple and straight-forward - to help those who participate in them to live healthy, happy, and longer lives through the use of a free-weight strength training lifestyle. The Program not only gets participants in the best shape of their lives, it also teaches them an amazing skill they will use to keep themselves in shape for the rest of their lives.

Training Philosophy

My training philosophy is anchored in the idea of total fitness through strength training. That means I use weight training as the primary means of helping my clients to achieve fitness. Beyond that, my training philosophy has a couple of parts to it… a specific fitness training philosophy, and a more general philosophy on how to teach people.

Fitness Training Philosophy - First, let me say that there is no one perfect way for everyone to train. Differing goals, injuries, health conditions, lifestyles, etc., dictate that each individual develop a training program appropriate for them. Having said that, what I have found works for me, and what research is now showing works for the vast number of trainees, is brief but intense training. A small number of big, basic exercises along with some supporting exercises, performed in perfect form, no more than three times a week. If you couple this type of strength training with some cardio-vascular and flexibility training, you can reach your potential for a strong, lean, injury-free body. This is the basis upon which I focus the training with my clients. It's a great way to train, and most importantly - it works!

General Training Philosophy - My general teaching/training philosophy is pretty simple - Teach people what they need to know to manage their lives... and get out of the way!

I want you to have the knowledge to be able to train in a productive and injury-free manner, and to be able to design new training programs for yourself for the rest of your life. When you are armed with this knowledge, training becomes a fun and challenging activity, versus one where you are dependent on a Personal Trainer to develop your programs, and you're mindlessly going through the motions of your latest prescribed training program sometimes without even knowing why.

My take on human nature is that most people know, intuitively, what is best for them, and my role is to enhance that knowledge by arming them with the information they need to take care of themselves for the rest of their lives. I want to teach you how to train so that you no longer need me. Hence, my "Training Clinic" approach to personal training.

Bio

I began lifting weights at the age of 13. My father was an old-time weight trainer, and he taught me many of the basics that are with me even to this day.

My 20's were devoted to starting my career in education and the counseling field.

In my 30's I became certified as a Personal Trainer for the first time.

In my 40's I became certified as a Personal Trainer with the NSCA.

I now live in Exeter, NH with my wife of 30 years. This is also where I train clients in my strength training studio. I am also a New Hampshire Justice of the Peace and perform marriages mostly on weekends.
