Bio
Upon returning stateside, Mr. Whitfill continued his formative years of musical training at Sam Houston State University where he studied wind band technique and conducting with master educator Dr. Ralph Mills. During this time, Jim also served as co-drum major of the 250 piece “Bearkat Marching Band”.
Upon completion of an initial two years of university study, Baylor University was selected as the final institution by which to gain greater affluent knowledge in the musical arts. While at Baylor, Mr. Whitfill studied percussion with Dr. Larry D. Vanlandingham and wind band pedagogy/conducting with Richard Floyd. He performed in concert upon several occasions with the prestigious Baylor Wind Ensemble, Baylor Symphony Orchestra, and professionally with the Waco Symphony. Whitfill graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Education degree in music.
In 1979, Jim Whitfill perused further study at Texas A&M University in percussion performance. Percussion professor, Dr. Robert Houston, along with director of bands Dave Ward and Gary Hill became Whitfill’s mentors in each respective area of musical study. The Master of Music Degree in Music Performance was conferred in 1985.
Mr. Whitfill was an avid educator, conductor, composer, and arranger within the public schools of Texas for over 30 years. During these years he was a wind/percussion instructor at Rockwall, Bowie (Bowie, Texas), and C. E. King High School (Sheldon Independent School District-Houston). During his tenure in each institution, bands flourished with superior ratings in marching and concert/sight reading competition both on a district, region, area, and state level. In addition, several professional DVD’s were produced during his later career which programmed educationally based percussion ensemble performances.
As a professional musician, Jim performed with the Hubbard Chamber Series of Greater Rockwall, The Starplex Amphitheater Orchestra, The Vocal Majority Chorus of Dallas, The Clear Lake Symphony Orchestra of Houston, The Houston Wind Symphony, The 1960 Playhouse, and many additional music union appointments.
After 30 years of service, Mr. Whitfill retired from public education and is currently an adjunct instructor of instrumental music at Grayson College, Sherman-Denison, Texas. In addition, he is also a personal trainer at Gold’s International in Dallas, Texas as well as a competitive amateur bodybuilder.
